2002 09 03 - Season Wrap-Up: From the Diamond to the Desk

September 3, 2002 — My season with the Gateway Grizzlies has officially come to an end, and what a summer it was. We played 84 games in less than three months with only six off-days. It might be "just baseball," but the physical toll is real—my body is definitely feeling every inning.

Still, I know how lucky I am. I spent the summer getting paid to play the game I love. But now that the season is over, it's time to head back to the "real world." I wanted to check in and see if anyone has leads on open positions in the St. Louis area.

If you keep your eyes open and see any opportunities that seem like a good fit for me, I’d really appreciate the heads-up.

2002 07 19 - One Door Closes, Another Opens

July 19, 2002 - The Rascals released me yesterday before the game. It’s a tough break, but this summer is turning out to be a crash course in resilience.

I never really got the shot to be an everyday starter in River City. Neil just didn't see me in that role, regardless of the fact that I’ve been batting around .300 and holding down centerfield all season. But that’s baseball.

I’m not waiting around, though. As soon as I got in the Jeep, I was on the phone with Rich, the manager of the Gateway Grizzlies. He wants me in East St. Louis for a workout today. Even with their roster maxed out at 24, Rich said, "We'll work something out." Luckily, I played well against them earlier this year, so he knows the caliber of player I am.

For now, I'm switching gears to go shopping for Shannon. Our first anniversary is this Sunday, July 21st. I’ll keep you guys posted on the Grizzlies situation.

Most notably, Mark has received an invitation to training camp with the River City Rascals in the independent Frontier League.

Keep checking back with Flyer9online. It’s going to be an exciting year.
